Ah Hung’s work was inspired by a feeling of permeability. This pushes me to understand the possibilities of narration and different ways to uncover our personal history. His story is intimate yet speaks to a collective moment, lucid yet ambiguous, affirmative yet remaining inconclusive at the same time. These things are from the past, but they are illuminated and pertinent to the present, and even future.
Ah Hung’s eyes drifted as if attracted by something. Crumbling floor tiles, scattered photographs, curtain beads with an aroma of galangal, and the sound of the sea coming from the cracks of a door. He roams around guided by his senses, whenever he comes across something, it causes him to become excited or hesitant. These seemingly unrelated objects and smells collectively weave a subtle web. The strands extend and awaken a flow of memories, together forming a transient container to create a sense of belonging for others. What has been ignored or repressed gradually loosens, and Ah Hung feels these impulses spreading through his body.
What is seen, heard, taken in, or replaced, together form a prelude to the B side of this story.
Step inside, slow down a little. Follow Ah Hung, take a sniff, and grasp onto another clue to history.
